While the headwaters of the Arkansas River, (the primary river in this basin), begin near Leadville, Colorado, the Upper Arkansas River Drainage Basin is located in the western part of the Central Region of Kansas. Running west to east, This drainage basin is comprised of eight distinct river basins or watersheds. They are: Whitewoman, Mid-Arkansas, Upper Walnut, Pawnee, Arkansas/Dodge City, Buckner, Coon/Pickerel and Lower Walnut. The Upper Arkansas River Drainage Basin exists in 16 Kansas counties. They are; Greeley County, Hamilton County, Wichita County, Kearny County, Greeley County, Finney County, Lane County, Gray County, Ness County, Hodgeman County, Ford County, Rush County, Pawnee County, Edwards County, Barton County, Stafford County.
