Yates Center

Founded: 1875, Population: (2000) 1,599, Elevation: 1,136 feet.

Yates Center is the county seat of Woodson County and is located directly west of Iola and south of Topeka at the junction of Highway s 54 and 75.

Organized in 1855. Yates Center was named in honor of Daniel Woodson, who was Secretary of the Territory, and for some time acting Governor, after the resignation of Governor Shannon in 1856. The courthouse square in Yates Center is an American classic. Over fifty buildings and stores are on the National Register of Historic Places.
