Standiford Field, name for Dr. Elisha David Standiford, a local businessman and legislator, opened in 1947. At the time, it was served by three airlines which handled around 1500 passengers per week. In 1999, the airport handled almost four million passengers. It is was one of the busiest cargo operations in the country, acting as the central hub for United Parcel Service.
