Donaldsonville is located in Ascension Parish (of which it is the parish seat) within the Plantation Country Region on the banks of the Mississippi River, between Baton Rouge and Thibodaux along Hwy 1 near White Castle and Napoleonville. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 8,941, an increase of 992 since 1990.
