Houma is located in Terrebonne Parish (of which it is the parish seat) within the Cajun Country Region southwest of New Orleans, between Thibodaux and Bourg along Hwy 24 near the Intracoastal Waterway, Lake Hackberry, Lake Boudreaux, Lake Theriot, Lake Fields, and Lake Long.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 29,964, a decrease of 531 since 1990.

Thirty hours of non-stop music are also an attraction of the festival.
