Jungle Gardens and Bird Sanctuary |
Avery Island's most spectacular feature, Jungle Gardens, has a wide variety of camelias, azaleas, tropical plants, and other plants and flowers, when in season. Also a bird sanctuary, Jungle Gardens was developed by the late Edward Avery McIlheny. Enormous flocks of herons and egrets rest here and can be seen most often in the early spring and summer. Also protected are ducks and other wild fowl in the winter. The Chinese Garden contains a Buddha dating back to 1000 AD. There is a small admission charge and the Gardens are open year round from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
