New Orleans these cemeteries were originally built above ground because of the moist soil. Water would fill the graves even before the coffins were lowered. The tombs, 100 or more feet long and four tiers high, are of solid masonary. The cemeteries are showing signs of becoming victims of their own unique form of architecture, for the lavish above-ground vaults also can provide cover for the disreputable. Futhermore, vandals sometimes desecrate tombs, and the resulting sight can be unpleasant. Those intending to visit any of the inner city cemeteries should be aware of these problems and plan to travel in groups.
