Winter Quarters State Historic Site |
Winter Quarters stands today as a rare survivor of the ravages of the Civil War and as a tribute to the bravery and ingenuity of one family. The large airy structure is the only one of its kind in the region to remain as a reflection of the state's early heritage. Built in three stages by the Routh and Nutt families, the home was the centerpiece of Dr. Haller Nutt's extensive cotton holdings. Through the gallant efforts of his wife, Julia, the home was saved from the torches of General Ulysses S Grant's forces, but all of the outbuildings perished and their livestock confiscated.
Today, the house holds mementos of an era gone by. In addition to period furnishings, copies of diaries on agriculture, an 1845 billiard table made by the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company, medicine and other topics provide a link to the antebellum period.
