The commune of Echternach, population 4,633, is located in the Sure
River valley, on Luxembourgs border with Germany, in the heart of the Little Switzerland
region. The most prominent aspect of Echternach is the towns Benedictine Abbey, founded in 698 by St. Willebrord. The abbeys Basilica was near-destroyed in 1944, but has since been reconstructed and features a white marble sarcophagus where St. Willebrord himself is interred.
Echternachs 15th century town hall and its 13th century fortifications are also of interest.
The E29/N11 roadway which comes into Echternach from the southwest continues on across the Sure into Germany. The N10 roadway, which hugs the Sure, also passes throug Echternach.
