The oldest arboretum in the country, and spanning over 265 acres, the Arnold Arboretum is a research and educational institution that manages a collection of hardy trees, shrubs, and vines. It is managed by Harvard University, but is part of the Boston Parks Department. Visitors to the Arboretum can also enjoy the herbarium and library collections. Founded in 1872 and named for its benefactor James Arnold, the Arboretum continues to collect woody plants from around the world and offer horticultural education to the public.
