Bird Island Light |
Bird Island Light is protected by the Bird Island Lighthouse Preservation Society, which maintains an office in Marion for this purpose. On the east side of Sippican Harbor, this 31-foot white rock conical tower, built in 1819, flashes a white light visible for ten miles, using 10 lamps with 14-inch reflectors through a 300mm lens. The light has a 1.2s flash interval and uses a bell fog signal.
The light is owned by the Town of Marion and is closed to the public. The island serves as a nesting ground for endangered roseate terns from May to August.
