Butler Flats Light |
This lighthouse, built in 1898 at a cost of $34,000, was designed by F. Hopkinson Smith, the man who built the foundation of the Statue of Liberty. The lighthouse is located in the New Bedford Channel, at the mouth of the Acushnet River near the city of New Bedford. Five feet of mud was dredged from the shallow flats to accommodate an iron cylinder 35 feet across, and filled with stone and concrete, to serve as the foundation for the tower. The tower was painted red for a time, but this color was somehow deemed inappropriate and it was changed to white in 1899.
The 53-foot tower is constructed of brick and cast iron. Its 300mm lens flashes white every four seconds. The lighthouse is not open to the public. It can be seen from the shore along East Rodney French Boulevard, and from the ferries leaving New Bedford for Martha's Vineyard and Cuttyhunk.
