Less than a mile off-shore from Rockport's picturesque harbor, the twin lighthouses of Thacher Island loom like sentinels guarding the coasts of Cape Ann. On that island in the Great Storm of 1635, Anthony Thacher and his wife were the only survivors of a shipwreck that swept away their children and friends. As a memento of that tragedy, the General Court granted Thacher that same island as his inheritance. In 1771, the Colonial Government bought back this 50-acre island, and erected twin lighthouses, now one hundred and sixty feet above sea level. The entire Island is now maintained by the Thacher Island Association, a non-profit organization, as a National Register Historic Site. Limited camping and a small apartment is available for overnight visitors.
