Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge |
The Great Meadows NWR was established in 1944. It consists of freshwater marsh and riverine habitat and associated wetlands located along 12 miles of the Concord and Sudbury rivers, 20 miles west of Boston. The refuge is managed primarily for migratory waterfowl. There is an extensive public use program to protect its integrity as a sanctuary for migratory birds. The protection of this area as a bird sanctuary makes it also suitable as a wetlands conservation area, including the conservation of endangered species or threatened species, and allows for incidental fish and wildlife-oriented recreational development, as well as a protected site for natural resources.
