John Hay National Wildlife Refuge |
Established March 19, 1987. The historic house and immediate grounds located on this refuge are managed by the New Hampshire Department of Parks and Recreation as a state historic site known as The Fells. A conservation education program is conducted on these grounds, which were the estate of John Hay, ambassador to Great Britain and personal Secretary to Abraham Lincoln. The Refuge's 162 acres are located along one mile of undeveloped Lake Sunapee lakeshore.
John Hay, noted author, naturalist and grandson of John Hay, maintains a lifetime use of 20 acres on the Refuge. It now functions as a bird sanctuary.
This refuge, on the border of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, is a satellite of the Great Meadows NWR. For more information, go back to the listing for Great Meadows NWR.
