The Whale Center of New England (WCNE), formerly the Cetacean Research Unit (CRU), was founded in 1980 to study the whales using waters off the Massachusetts coast, especially Stellwagen Bank and Jeffreys Ledge. A preeminent research institution, its over 20 years of field-based studies, utilizing individual identification markings for detailed behavioral studies are the basis for many published scientific articles by the Whale Center's staff and interns, the development of educational materials, and involvement in conservation efforts involving marine animals and their habitat.
