Established in 1907 to provide medical care and education of youngsters with birth defects and polio, the Massachusetts Hospital School now provides medical, rehabilitative, recreational and educational services to children and young adults who are physically disabled. Services include speech, occupational, and physical therapies, an on-Site school for residential and 30 day students (K-12), operated by the Department of Education, and various specialized recreation activities.
The School's operation is under the guidance of the Bureau of Hospitals of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
