New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) includes graduate, undergraduate, preparatory, and continuing education divisions offering instruction in classical music, jazz, and contemporary improvisation. Founded in 1867, it is Americas oldest independent school of music. It is also the only school of music to be designated a National Historic Landmark. NEC strives to serve society by training outstanding performers, composers, and teachers. Beyond the 782 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled, over 1200 children, teenagers, and adults participate in preparatory and continuing education courses. NEC has more than 360 artist-teachers on the college, preparatory, and continuing education faculties, and maintains a student/faculty ratio of 4:1. It offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees as well as an undergraduate diploma, graduate diploma and an artist diploma. First-year students are required to live on campus. For other students it is space available.
