It was from a class reunion at Smith College that Betty Friedan got the inspiration for her book, The Feminine Mystique. Smith College is the largest independent women's college in the United States. Founded in 1871, the college is located in the town of Northampton, 90 miles west of Boston. Its programs are almost entirely for undergraduates. Tuition is high and the admission process is highly selective, with little more than half of applicants being accepted. Popular majors include government and psychology. The Smith College campus is located on 125 acres of tree-lined paths and streets. A 2500-student undergraduate enrollment enjoys a student/faculty ratio of 10:1. The 5-school consortium with nearby campuses - Amherst, Hampshire and Mount Holyoke colleges and the University of Massachusetts, offer over 4500 courses to all students.
