Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) was founded just after the Civil War. Its philosophy of education from its very beginnings was "the best way to learn is by doing". After a firm grounding in science and technology, students learn to apply their knowledge by tackling real problems.
On its 80-acre campus, almost 3000 students are engaged in applying what they learn, in academic programs leading to Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees, in engineering, management and the basic science disciplines. An average student/faculty ratio is 10:1.
