Located in the Old Mount Mariah AME Church, circa 1874-75, on Franklin Street; the museum preserve's Maryland's African American heritage, as well as serving as the official state repository of African American cultural material.
The museum's collections include artifacts and photographs relating black life in Maryland, African and African American art objects, historical documents, and rare books. The museum also sponsors and hosts a variety of public programs that include lectures, workshops, and performances.
Guided group exhibition tours can be arranged by request, and museum archival materials are available for public research by appointment. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday; admission is free to the public.
