This 89-foot lighthouse began operation in 1859, and remained in service until 1978, warning ships away from Maryland's Fenwick Shoal. In 1981, public outcry led to reinstallation of the original light, imported from France and weighing about 1,500 pounds; the lighthouse has been in service since that time. The restored lighthouse is open to the public on select days throughout the summer.
