This five-acre, barrier-free garden provides a delightful oasis amid a complex of state government office buildings, and honors Mrs. Millard J. Tawes, former first lady of the state of Maryland from 1959-67.
The state's various geographic areas are given representation in the garden, which features a western forest, a streamside environment, and an Eastern Shore peninsula. Visitors will enjoy the site's pleasant ponds; a raised planter featuring plants of varying textures, tastes and fragrances; and many supplemental cultivated plantings. A gift shop and cafeteria are also located within the garden site.
Guided tours of the gardens are available by pre-arrangement, and self-guiding brochures outline the grounds for exploration at your own pace. The garden is open dawn-dusk; many of the educational programs hosted at the site are free of charge.
