A growing suburb northeast of the
Washington metro area, Laurel was once a small industrial center. Cotton and grain no longer draw visitors, but horse racing does from early October to mid-March. Laurel Park has been offering thoroughbred racing since 1911. The track features the International, a race that presents leading horses from around the world. In
Prince Georges County, Laurel lies on Baltimore Washington Boulevard (US 1).
