Montgomery County Public Libraries, serving an area of 880,000 residents, has a collection of 2,600,000 books and periodicals; in addition, there are 147,000 CDs, records, cassettes and other audio materials, as well as 100,000 video items, such as DVDs and VHS tapes. Staffing consists of 420 employees, of whom 140 are fully accredited librarians, plus volunteers. The system comprises21 branch libraries, plus 3 bookmobiles. Annual expenditures on the library collection total $6,300,000. Patrons make 6,900,000 visits annually, and check out materials 11,500,000 times. Forty-eight percent of all check-outs are children's materials.
