Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House Museum |
This was the house where President Abraham Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth, was treated for a broken leg on the morning after the famous shooting. Dr. Mudd, unaware of the events of the previous evening, as well as the true identity of his patient, was nevertheless convicted of complicity for which he received a life sentence. Mudd was later pardoned in 1869.
The 10-acre Mudd property includes the House Museum, a gift shop, a kitchen and exhibit building, and a few other scattered outbuildings. The house, furnished with period family furnishings, can be toured beginning the first weekend in April and then closes in late November; special exhibits are displayed throughout the year in the kitchen. Group tours arranged by appointment. Historic public programs hosted at the site include Civil War encampments.
