Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton |
Located on South Seton Avenue, this shrine is on the grounds of St. Joseph's Provincial House. In the first decade of the 19th century, Mother Seton, founder of the American chapter of the Sisters of Charity, began the first parochial school in the country. She was canonized in 1975, the first native-born American woman to be so honored. A museum displaying some of Seton's personal effects and a chapel containing her remains are among the restored and furnished buildings. The chapel has been designated a minor basilica.
Museum open daily 10am-4:30pm in April through October. Basilica open daily 10am-4:30pm.
