State House

Designated as a National Historic Landmark, this is the oldest state capitol building in continuous legislative use and the only one ever to have served as the nation's capitol. Construction was begun in 1772; the present dome, completed in 1794, is the oldest and largest wooden dome of its kind in the country. At the far right of the State House is the Old Treasury Building which remains the oldest public building in Annapolis.

The state house contains a wealth of historical artifacts displayed throughout the building, including the original President's desk, made for the State House in 1796-7; the state Archives room is open to public research five days a week. Tours of the building are scheduled twice daily, beginning at the Visitor Center; no tours on Thanksgiving or New Year's Day.
