Jacob Rohrbach Inn |
The Inn is located in Sharpsburg, an intact Civil War era town, in the scenic Western Maryland Blue Ridge area. Built about 1804, by Capt. Joseph Chapline, a patriot of the American Revolution, it is a perfect example of Federal style architecture. With its fanlight entrance, ornate ironwork and seven fireplaces, the Inn has been graciously restored. Founded in 1763, Sharpsburg (population 602) is surrounded by the Antietam Civil War Battlefield, site of the bloodiest day in American history (Sept. 17, 1862) and renowned as the most preserved of all Civil War sites. During the battle, many of Sharpsburg's homes and churches were damaged by artillery, and many buildings still display their scars. The Inn is named for Jacob Rohrbach who lost his life on July 4, 1864 while defending the property against three Confederate horsemen of Mosby's Rangers, who had come to the house demanding the Rohrbach's horses. Nearby attractions include South Mountain, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Na
