Ellsworth is located in Hancock County, of which it is the county seat, southeast of Bangor between Bucksport and Machias along US Highway 1 near Graham Lake and the Atlantic seacoast.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 6,283, an increase of 308 since 1990.
