Stillwater Montessori School was started in August 1983 by Joanne and Joe Alex.
All classrooms have computers which are very popular with students of all ages. Because of the University of Maine and its international community, Stillwater Montessori School has students from many different nationalities and religious backgrounds. Because of this, cultural studies and celebrations are an important aspect of the curriculum. It has a strong environmental philosophy and actively participates in Project Learning Tree, Project Wild, Adopt a Forester program, Wild School sites, Penobscot Riverkeepers, and Project Wild Aquatic.
