Historically, this town was settled by John Gaffney, an Irishman, who first named the town "Skinner." Later, he changed the towns name to "Auburn," after a poem written by the famous Irish poet Oliver Goldsmith: "Sweet Auburn, loveliest village on the plain!" Today, Auburn remains a major agricultural community and an adjunct community to Bay City.
