Cascade is located in Kent County, and in the West-Southwest Region. Cascade is part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland, Michigan metro area. This community is located just east of Grand Rapids between Grand Rapids and Lansing along Interstate 96 on the banks of the Thornapple River near the Grand River and Murray Lake.

Joel Guild originally owned the village of Cascade. In 1845, D.S.T. Weller bought the property from Guild and had it built-up into a village that he named from "the fine fall of water," which he hoped would lead to the erection of water-power mills.
