Chesaning Michigan |
Chesaning is in Saginaw, and in the Central Region. This community is located just south of Saginaw between Saginaw and Owosso along Highway 57 on the banks of the Shiawassee River near the Flint River. Chesaning is part of the Saginaw-Bay City-Midland, Michigan metro area.
Chesaning was first pioneered in 1839 by Thomas W. Wright. At that time, it was called Northhampton, and Wright was soon to become the first postmaster there. It was renamed "Chesaning,"(which in Indian stands for "Big Rock,") in 1853 and gathered as a village in 1869.
Chesaning is often referred to as "Showboat City" for its Showboat on the river that is used as a stage in the Showboat Festival held each summer.
