Clio is in
Genesee County, and in the
Central Region. To locate Clio, travel just north of Flint between
Flint and
Saginaw along US Highway 23 near the Flint River and Buell Lake. Clio is part of the
Flint, Michigan metro area.
Like so very many others in Michigan, Clio began as a lumbering town. The town started in 1837 when Theodore P. Dean built a sawmill here. The Pere Marquette Railroad in 1861 built the Varna Station here (named because it was on the Varna family farm). It was renamed Clio by the first postmaster, David Huyck in 1866. It was incorporated as a village in 1873 and later as a city in 1928.
