Coloma is in
Berrien County, and in the
West-Southwest Region. Coloma is located west of
Kalamazoo between
Benton Harbor and
Holland along US Highway 31 near Paw Paw Lake and
Lake Michigan. Coloma is part of the
Benton Harbor, Michigan metro area.
The land now known as Coloma was originally named Dickerville because of bartering done by area business men. Shortly after, Stephen Gilson platted the village and named it Coloma, after his native home town in California.
Today, tourism plays a large part in Coloma's growth. The area is a favorite to boaters and fisherman with Lake Michigan only a few miles away with public access to Big Paw Paw Lake available.
