Holly is in Oakland County, and in the Southeast Region. This community is located northwest of Detroit between Flint and Pontiac along Interstate 75 near Lake Fenton and Tipsico Lake. Holly is part of the Detroit, Michigan metro area.

Holly's first settler was Nathan Herrick who came to the area in 1830. In 1843, a sawmill was built by Ira C. Alger. It eventually incorporated into a village in 1865.
