Howell is in
Livingston County (of which it is the county seat), and in the
Southeast Region. Howell is located just northwest of
Detroit between Detroit and
Lansing along Interstate 96 near Chemung Lake.
Howell is part of the Ann Arbor, Michigan metro area.
In 1834, George T. and James Sage, John D. Pinckney and David Austin made the first settlements in Howell. The town was first known as Livingston Centre, from its position in the county. It was platted in 1835 by Flavius J. B. Crane, from Edward Brooks, who named it for Thomas Howell, a friend of Mr. Crane and son of Judge Howell, of Canandaigua, N.Y.
Howell was incorporated as a village in 1863 and as a city in 1914.
