Inkster is in
Wayne County, and in the
Southeast Region. This community is located between
Dearborn and
Wayne on US Hwy 12. Inkster is part of the
Detroit, Michigan metro area.
Inkster was settled in 1825. Built up here was a post office as Moulin Rouge on December 31, 1857, with Josiah Dort as the new building's first postmaster. Robert Inkster, a Scot, operated a steam sawmill on present-day Inkster Rd., near Michigan Ave., in the early 1860's, and the post office was renamed Inkster on July 11, 1863. The settlement was given a station on the Michigan Central Railroad by 1878.
Inkster was incorporated as a village in 1926 and as a city in 1964.
