Lowell is in
Kent County, and in the
West-Southwest Region (part of the
Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland, Michigan metropolitan area). You can locate Lowell at the mouth of the Flat River where it flows into the Grand, between
Ionia and
Grand Rapids along State Hwy 21.
Lowell was originally settled in the 1840s by Daniel Marsac who built a trading post there and named it Dansville. It was renamed Lowell, after the township, when the railroad went through in 1851. Lowell was named after a city by the same name in Massachusetts to attract people from that state to come to Michigan to settle.
Now days, Lowells downtown area has been completely restored, with a town clock and Victorian style lamps along the sidewalk that accent the turn-of-the-century architecture seen through out so many of its buildings. Lowell is often referred to as the Showboat City with its riverboat show held every summer.
