Manistique is in Schoolcraft County, and in the Northern Region. This community is located east of Escanaba along US Highway 2 on the banks of the Manistique River near the Indian Lake State Park. The county seat is situated on the shore of Lake Michigan.
Henry Schoolcraft founded this area in 1871. He named it after the Ojibawa name for the Monistique (meaning vemillion) River. When the name was registered with the state someone had made a spelling error; although, he let it stand. On March 17, 1873, William M. Colwell became the first postmaster. At the time the station was named Epsport, but was changed to Manistique on January 27, 1879. The station was on the St. Paul & Sault Ste Marie and Minneapolis Railroad.
This settlement was incorporated as a village in 1885 and as a city in 1901.
