Mc Bain is in Missaukee County, and in the Northern Region. This community is located southeast of Traverse City between Cadillac and Houghton Lake along Highway 56 near the Clam River and Lake Cadillac. In 1877 Gillis McBain founded this sawmill settlement in Riverside Township. Its station on the Toledo, Ann Arbor & Northern Michigan Railroad, was given a post office on August 27, 1874. Storekeeper George W. Hughston was the first postmaster. This settlement was incorporated as a village in 1893, and then as a city in 1907.
