One of Detroit's oldest and best-known teaching hospitals, Harper University Hospital opened in 1863 as a military hospital for Union soldiers. Over the years it became known for its medical and surgical expertise, becoming a "medical magnet," servicing the most difficult and desperate cases of the day with remarkably low mortality rates. By 1890, Harper University Hospital had earned national and international reputation for pioneering new surgical procedures, especially the appendectomy, which saved the lives of thousands around the turn of the century. Today, together with Wayne State University School of Medicine, Harper University Hospital strives to be the region's premier health care resource, providing a broad range of clinical services, innovation through the discovery and application of knowledge, and education of health care practitioners, teachers and scientists.
