The school is the nation's pioneer land-grant university. From three buildings in a field of stumps near the Red Cedar River, it has grown to a 5,320 acre educational complex with one of the largest enrollments in the country. The university's housing complex lodges more than 20,000 students and student families. Walking tours of the campus can be arranged.
