Monroe

Monroe is in Monroe County (is the county seat), and in the Southeast Region. This community is located southwest of Detroit along Interstate 75 on the banks of the Raisin River near the shoreline of Lake Erie.

Monroe is part of the Detroit, Michigan metro area.

Monroe is mainly supported by an economy in steel production, furniture, paper products, electrical power and auto parts.

Monroe was first known as Frenchtown, only the third major community in Michigan by 1815. In 1817, an American community began along the south side of the river. It was named in honor of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, after he visited the town in 1817.
