Newaygo is located in
Newaygo County, and in the
West-Southwest Region. This community is located at the junction of M-37 and M-82, and also east of
Fremont.
Newaygos documented history dates back to the mid 1700s when French explorers and trappers came up the Muskegon River. It was named after Chief Naw-wa-goo, who signed the Treaty of Saginaw in 1812. In 1836 John Brooks traveled here to harvest lumber; he became the towns first postmaster in 1847. Newaygo grew during the lumber boom because of its location on the Muskegon, (which flows through the north side of town).
Today, Newaygo has a small town atmosphere, driven by local small business and a few manufacturing facilities, along with some tourism.
