Newberry is in Luce County (of which it is the county seat), and in the Northern Region. This community is located west of Sault Ste Marie between Sault Ste Marie and McMillan along Highway 123 on the banks of the Mud River near Manistique Lake.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,923, an increase of 50 since 1990.
In 1882 this area was first called Grant's Corner, and was designated as the logging headquarters of the Vulcan Furnace Company. On June 21, 1882 this area was renamed Newberry in honor of the Detroit industrialist Truman H. Newberry. The village was incorporated in 1885.
Today, Newberry is supported mainly by small business and tourism. Newberry offers snowmobiling, mountain biking, canoeing, train rides, boating, cross country skiing and many trail heads for you to enjoy while you're here.
