New Buffalo

New Buffalo is in Berrien County, and in the West-Southwest Region of Michigan. This community is located southwest of Kalamazoo between Benton Harbor and the Indiana state line along Interstate 94 on the banks of the Green River near the shore of Lake Michigan. New Buffalo is part of the Benton Harbor, Michigan metro area.

In 1834, the vessel the "Post Boy", captained by Wessel D. Whittaker, was wrecked when it ran aground near a natural harbor on Lake Michigan. The Captain saved his crew and returned to his home in Buffalo, NY. Captain Whittaker was so impressed with the area that he began to draw up plans for a community. In 1835, Captain Whittaker returned along with a few investors and began installing his plans. New Buffalo was incorporated as a village in 1836.

Today, New Buffalo's streets are lined with unique specialty stores, eateries and art galleries. The beach at New Buffalo's Lakefront Park is an excellent place to watch the sailboats or a sunset.
