Norway is in Dickinson County, and in the Northern Region. This community is located along State Hwy 2 and west of Iron Mountain.

In 1878 a Norwegian by the name of Anton Odell, platted this village. In 1879 George and James O'Callaghan built a sawmill here. On September 11, 1879, the village received a post office called Ingolsdorf. Charles E. Knowlton was the first postmaster. Shortly after, on December 8, 1879 the post office name was changed to Norway. This settlement was incorporated as a city in 1891 with a station on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 2,962, an increase of 52 since 1990.
