Portage is in Kalamazoo County, and in the West-Southwest Region (part of the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, Michigan metropolitan area). This community is located off of US Hwy 131 on Centre Ave., and south of Westwood.
Portage was originally settled in 1830 when a Mr. Herring constructed the first log cabin here. In 1836, it was first registered as "Sweetland" when John E. Howard started the Post Office. In 1838, Moses Austin helped bring together the Township, and the town was renamed after Portage Creek, its main stream.
Today, Portage has a strong, economy, including everything from pharmaceuticals to auto products. It is also the main shopping region in the Kalamazoo area, with several malls, plazas and many fine restaurants.
